Tired of guessing?

Tired of feeling misunderstood?

You’re not alone and you’re in the right place.

My name is Erin McCarthy Shaw, and I work with people who think and learn differently—whether that’s ADHD, autism, giftedness, learning differences, or something that doesn’t fit neatly into a box. I offer neurodiversity-affirming services that include neuropsychiatric and psychoeducational assessment, ongoing medication management, and targeted interventions such as Cogmed working memory training. I specialize in identifying complex, often-overlooked patterns—especially in individuals who have felt misunderstood, misdiagnosed, or unsupported for years.

About Erin

I’ve spent my career helping people understand their unique minds — and I’m passionate about making this process clear, affirming, and actually useful in real life. Learn more about my training and approach!

You Have More Options Than You Think

In a time when public conversations about neurodivergence are increasingly loud and often misinformed, it can be hard to know where to turn. Not everyone needs or wants a formal diagnosis. Some people are looking for clarity. Others are trying to understand complex patterns, navigate systems, or find practical tools to help them function and thrive.

I offer a range of neurodiversity-affirming services that can be adapted to your goals, including comprehensive assessment, collaborative feedback, targeted intervention, Cogmed working memory training, and medication management when appropriate.

Wherever you are in the process, we’ll choose an approach that meets your needs with care, precision, and respect.

Comprehensive Neuropsychiatric & Psychoeducational Assessment

  • I provide individualized assessments for ADHD, autism, dyslexia, dyscalculia, learning differences, giftedness, and twice-exceptionality (2e). These evaluations are designed to answer meaningful questions about how someone learns, communicates, adapts, and experiences the world.

  • Clients may choose to receive a full written report, which can be used to support accommodations in school or work settings. For those who do not require a full report, I can provide a brief summary letter tailored to the referral question and context.

Private Pay Options

  • Paying privately allows for greater clinical flexibility and depth. Without insurance restrictions, we are not limited to narrow diagnostic categories or billing codes, and your information remains fully confidential unless you choose to share it.

  • This approach supports more nuanced exploration—especially when the questions are complex, overlapping, or involve identity, twice-exceptionality, or past misdiagnosis. It also allows us to focus on what is meaningful and useful, not just what is billable.

Therapeutic Assessment

  • Therapeutic assessment is a collaborative, short-term process that uses psychological testing as a vehicle for reflection and growth.

  • Rather than focusing solely on diagnosis, this process centers on developing a comprehensive neuroprofile—a detailed picture of how an individual processes, learns, adapts, and functions across settings.

    • A neuroprofile integrates test data, narrative context, and lived experience to clarify longstanding patterns and provide insight into strengths, vulnerabilities, and the types of support that may be most effective.

  • This approach is especially valuable for individuals who have felt misunderstood, misdiagnosed, or who are navigating complex questions about identity, performance, or unmet potential.

  • Feedback is shared throughout the process, and clients are invited into interpretation and discussion. This approach is particularly helpful for adolescents and adults navigating self-concept, transitions, or a history of feeling misunderstood. It is available to private-pay clients and may or may not include a written summary depending on the intended use.

Assessment Format Options: In-Person or Remote

  • Assessments are available in-person at my offices in Saratoga Springs, NY and Westport, CT, or remotely using secure platforms and validated tools.

  • Remote evaluations offer the same high standard of care, clinical depth, and one-on-one connection as in-person assessments. Some clients initially worry that something might be “missed” without being physically in the room, but when done thoughtfully by a clinician seasoned in providing remote care, remote assessment can be just as effective. In fact, seeing clients in their own environment often provides context that would not emerge in a clinical office.

  • In-person testing is still available when specific measures or observational needs make it the better fit. Whichever format you choose, the evaluation will be personalized, thorough, and grounded in best practices.

Medication Management

  • Virtual medication management services are available on a selective basis.
